A Cup of Tea In Infinite Futures:
A Positive Look at Speculative Fates

This installation was the culmination of internal and external research trying to answer the question, “What will happen in the future?” Im my thesis, I review the boom in popularity of dystopian speculative fiction from my childhood with its similarity to certain aspects of our societal climate as so 2024. Then examine and provide a reaction in the form of escapist Slice-or-Life Speculative Fiction or Magical Realism which displays everyday life and moments of mundane existence.

My personal reactions culminated in a set of positive speculative outcomes displayed as kinetic vignettes / diorama scenes with a variety of materials (PLA 3D printing, textiles, woodworking, etc.). Three dioramas depict speculations of quiet moments and stability, while with the fourth points to the activity of speculation. In creating these dioramas, I became aware that the act of planning the vignettes (sketching layouts of each work, determining how to put the tables together, etc.) was an act of speculation in itself. Thus, the exhibition also presented the act of creating these potential futures through a worktable installation and printed sketches amongst the vignettes displaying the very process of their creation.
